Yankees Season Rests on Arm of Hughes

With the Yankees in an 0-2 hole in the American League Championship Series, Joe Girardi will depend on Phil Hughes to save the Bombers season. 

The Yankees will be in Detroit for Game 3 tonight against the Tigers, and feel that maybe going on the road to play will help the team loosen up and get out of their offensive funk. The Yankee offense has been non existent this postseason, and have now put the Yankees two games away from elimination, and every game becoming a must win. So, much for loosening up at the plate. The Yankees lineup has struggled from top to bottom, with few bright spots. 

Raul Ibanez has carried the Yankee offense this postseason with three home runs, all coming in the ninth inning or later to to tie or win the game. Ichiro Suzuki has also been hot at the plate, especially in the ALCS. Suzuki is hitting .400 with a home run and two RBI. After Suzuki and Ibanez, no Yankee is hitting above .250 this series, and have combined for zero home runs along with zero RBI. 

The Yankee pitching has kept this team in the postseason, and still give the Yankees hope if they can continue to keep the Tigers lineup at bay. Tonight the task of taming the Tigers is given to Phil Hughes. In Hughes' ALDS start, he went 6 2/3 innings, giving up four hits, striking out eight, and the only run he allowed was a solo home run. 

Hughes will be facing the reigning AL Cy Young and AL MVP winner Justin Verlander tonight. Hughes faced Verlander in Detroit during the regular season, and out dueled Verlander with a complete game. Hughes allowed four hits and a solo home run in the Yankees 5-1 win over the Tigers. Unfortunately for Hughes, he will have to put up a similar performance tonight, and hope the Yankee bats can get him any kind of run support. 

Every game has become do or die for the Yankees, and a loss tonight in Detroit spells the end of the season for the Bronx Bombers who have been anything but. If the Yankees need some inspiration to climb out of this hole they have dug, perhaps they should look at the 2004 ALCS where they were up three games to none on the Boston Red Sox, and ended losing the series 4-3. 

Game 3 between the Yankees and Tigers will start at 8:00 pm tonight.

Yankees Bounce Back Against Blue Jays

Yankees vs Blue Jays Post Game Recap 8/28

The Yankees were able to bounce back from a tough loss on Monday with a win on Tuesday over the Blue Jays beating them by a score of 2-1.

Phil Hughes looked really good in earning his 13^th win of the season. Hughes went seven innings allowing four hits, three walks, one run, and had 5 strikeouts. Hughes was able to reach a career milestone with his final strikeout in the 7^th inning it was his 500^th of his career.

Rafael Soriano was able to have a bounce back night after his blown save on Monday. Soriano looked on point and was lighting up the radar gun striking out two batters, and earned his 34^th save of the season.

Nick Swisher getting the start at first base for the injured Teixeira was able to keep his bat hot going 1 for 3 with a RBI base hit, and a walk.

Newly reacquired Steve Pearce played his first game in the majors for the Yankees after playing in the minors for them earlier in the season. Pearce was thrown into the cleanup spot showing how weak the Yankees order can be against lefties. He wasn’t able to get a hit going 0 for 2 with a walk, and run scored.

Jayson Nix got the start at third base due to a lefty pitching and Casey McGehee being sent down until September call ups, and was able to go 2 for 3 with a run scored.

Yankees will be looking to take the rubber game on Thursday afternoon, as C.C Sabathia (13-3, 3.44) will face J.A Happ (2-1, 4.15).

Yankees Lose to Blue Jays in Extras

Yankees vs. Blue Jays Post Game Recap 8/27

The Yankees suffered a tough extra innings loss to the Blue Jays losing to the Jays 8-7 in 11 innings after having the lead most of the game.

David Phelps did a good job filling in for Ivan Nova, as Phelps left the game in position to pick up the win. Phelps went 6.1 innings allowing five hits, one walk, four runs, and had seven strikeouts. The long ball did hurt Phelps a bit, as he gave up a solo shot to Adam Lind, and a two-run shot to Yorit Torrealba.

It looked like the Yankees were on their way to the win with a two run lead in the 9th and Rafael Soriano on the mound but he was unable to get it done. Soriano gave up a three-run homerun to Colby Rasmus which gave the Blue Jays a 7-6 lead at the time.

Derek Lowe picked up the loss in extras, as a costly error by Lowe on a pickoff attempt to first base allowed Mike McCoy to go to third base and later scored the game winning run.

Captain Clutch Derek Jeter was able to come thru in a big spot hitting a game tying solo homerun in the bottom of the 9th inning for his 14th homer of the season.

Nick Swisher was able to hit a two-run shot in the 5th inning for his 20th homerun of the season, but was 1 for 6 in the game with three strikeouts.

Robinson Cano is heating up at the right time for the Yankees now, as Cano was able to hit two solo homeruns for his 26th and 27th homeruns of the season.

Eric Chavez when in the lineup continues to play well going 3 for 4 with a walk, and run scored.

The Yankees may have suffered another big injury blow to the team as Mark Teixeira left the game in the 4th inning with a grade 1 calf strain and is expected to miss some time.

The Yankees will look to rebound after the tough loss, as Phil Hughes (12-11, 4.15) will face Ricky Romero (8-11, 5.63).

Yankees vs. White Sox Post Game Recap 8/22

The Yankees woes in Chicago continued, as the Yankees were swept by the A.L Central leading White Sox by a score of 2-1.

Yankees hitters were dominated by Chris Sale who picked up his 15th win of the season. Sale went 7.2 innings allowing three hits, one walk, one run, and had thirteen strikeouts.

Phil Hughes on almost any other night would have gotten the win with the way he pitched but instead got his 11th loss of the season. Hughes went seven innings allowing five hits, two walks, two runs, and had five strikeouts.

Derek Jeter was able to smack another homerun on Wednesday for his 3rd straight game with a homerun in Chicago. The homerun was Jeter’s 13th of the season his highest amount of homeruns in a season since 2009.

One positive sign for the Yankees was that Robinson Cano who was in an awful slump may be snapping out of it. Cano was able to go 2 for 4 hitting his 33rd double of the season just missing a homerun.

The sweep to the White Sox has opened the door for the Tampa Bay Rays, as the Rays have cut the Yankees lead in the division to only 3 games now.

The Yankees will have a off day on Thursday before starting a series in Cleveland, as C.C Sabathia (12-3, 3.56) will be making his return from the DL to face his former team and their starter Corey Kluber (0-2, 6.27).

Yankees vs. White Sox Post Game Recap 8/21

The New York Yankees lost to the Chicago White Sox for a second straight game, losing by a score of 7-3. The Yankees despite having a great home stand have seen their division lead shrink, as the Tampa Bay Rays are coming up in the rear view mirror quick only trailing by 4 games.

Ivan Nova had a tough time against a good White Sox lineup losing his 7th game of the season. Nova pitched six innings allowing seven hits, two walks, six earned runs, and struck out three. The big blow to the Yankees and Nova was done by Kevin Youkilis who hit a grand slam in the 5th inning to break a 2-2 tie at the time.

Derek Lowe pitched the final two innings for the Yankees allowing five hits, one walk, one run, as Lowe was able to keep the White Sox from really blowing the game open.

Derek Jeter after a milestone breaking night wasted little time moving up the hits leader board passing Eddie Murray for 11th all-time with a leadoff homerun for his 12th of the season.  The 1st inning homerun also tied Jeter with his former manager Joe Torre at 252 career homeruns. Pete Rose was but on notice too, as Jeter is now exactly 1,000 hits away from Rose.

Russell Martin was able to have a good game going 2 for 4 hitting his 14th homerun of the season in the 7th inning.

Robinson Cano who was once an MVP candidate has hit a rough patch at a very bad time. Cano went 0 for 4 against the White Sox, and is now batting only .302 for the season.

The Yankees will look to try and avoid the sweep in Chicago, as Phil Hughes (12-10, 4.23) will face Cy Young hopeful Chris Sale (14-4, 2.72).

Yankees Power Past Red Sox

Yankees vs. Red Sox Post Game Recap 8/17

The Yankees were able to take the series opener with the rival Red Sox beating them 6-4 on Friday night.

Phil Hughes was able to pickup his 12th win of the season bouncing back nicely from his bad start in Toronto. Hughes went seven innings allowing four hits, one walk, and four unearned runs. The third inning was where Hughes saw trouble giving up four unearned after a throwing error on him, the Red Sox were able to rally with Dustin Pedroia doing the major damage hitting a three-run homerun.

Rafael Soriano has become a sure thing in the 9th inning, as Soriano picked up his 30th save of the season putting the Red Sox down in order to end the game.

Derek Jeter was able to extend his hitting streak to 13 games with a milestone homerun for his 250th of his career, and 10th of the season.

Nick Swisher had a big day going 2 for 3 with a walk, and two solo homeruns for his 17th and 18th homeruns of the season.

Curtis Granderson also went deep for his 31st homerun of the season in the 2nd inning, as Granderson went 2 for 4.

Russell Martin went back to back with Granderson in the 2nd inning for his 13th of the season.

Yankees offense has scored in large part due to homeruns this season, and with five solo shots against the Red Sox including Jeter’s 10th of the season the Yankees now have 10 players with double digit homeruns.

The Yankees will look for another win over the Red Sox to continue to bury their playoff hopes, as David Phelps (3-3, 2.53) will face Jon Lester (6-10, 5.20) on Saturday afternoon.

Yankees Unable to Sweep Rangers

The Yankees were unable to pull of the four game sweep over the Rangers, as the great Texas lineup came alive beating the Yankees 10-6.

Ivan Nova was not able to replicate his last start, as the Rangers bats got to Nova.  Ivan went 5.2 innings allowing seven hits, four walks, and four runs in the no decision.

The bullpen had one of its worse days of the seasons allowing six runs in the final 3.1 innings. Cody Eppley, Boone Logan, Joba Chamberlain, and Clay Rapada all gave up one run with Chamberlain and Logan each giving up two runs.

Derek Jeter was able to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, as Jeter went 2 for 5 with a RBI, and run scored. Jeter did benefit from a hometown call on one of the hits could have been a fielders choice and an error on Elvis Andrus.

Andruw Jones batting cleanup with no Cano or Granderson in the lineup was able to hit a two-run shot in the 6th inning for his 13th of the season.

After a 3 for 3 day with his 20th double of the year, and a run scored Ichiro is now batting over .300 since joining the Yankees making it seem that him batting 8th may not be lasting much longer.

The best rivalry in baseball will add another chapter with the 4th place Red Sox coming to town with their playoff hopes in jeopardy, as Phil Hughes (11-10, 4.44) will face Franklin Morales (3-3, 3.29).

Yankees Unable to Sweep Blue Jays

The Yankees had their 4 game winning streak snapped by the Blue Jays who were able to avoid the sweep beating the Yankees 10-7.

Yankees starter Phil Hughes had a very bad start against a lineup that he should have dominated losing his 10^th game of the season. Hughes was only able to go four innings allowing nine hits, one walk, and seven runs.

New call-up Ryota Igarashi didn’t pitch very well coming in after Hughes letting the Blue Jays extend the lead even more. Igarashi pitched two innings allowing three hit, one walk, and three runs.

Blue Jays left fielder Rajai Davis had a career day against the Yankees going 2 for 5 with five RBIs, a run scored, and a stolen base. Davis also make a spectacular catch robbing Casey McGehee of a homerun in the 7^th inning.

Derek Jeter continues to his hot hitting going 3 for 5. Jeter ripped his 23^rd double of the season knocking in a run, and hit a solo shot in the sixth inning for his ninth homerun of the season.

Robinson Cano was also able to hit a homerun in the sixth inning, a two-run shot scoring Nick Swisher for his 25^th homerun of the season.

Nick Swisher was able to have a nice multi-hit game going 2 for 5 while scoring a run, and knocking in Jeter for his 58^th RBI of the season.

Catcher Russell Martin was the only Yankee starter that wasn’t able to get at least one hit going 0 for 4, as he had a shot to get above the .200 mark in the game but was unable to get a hit.

The Yankees will be heading home to start a big seven game home-stand against the Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox. The Yankees will start the series with Texas on Monday as it is believed David Phelps (2-3, 2.42) will take C.C Sabathias start, and will face Ryan Dempster (1-0, 6.35).

Yankees vs. Blue Jays Post Game Recap 8/11

The Yankees were able to make it four straight wins on the road trip by beating the Blue Jays 5-2.

Ivan Nova who has been awful since the All-Star break may have found his old self in picking up his 11th win of the season. Nova was able to go 7.2 innings allowing five hits, one walk, and two runs. The biggest thing for Nova in this start was he located his slider and curveball using them both to get 9 of his 10 strikeouts.

The final five outs went smoothly for the Yankees, as Robertson got the final two outs in the 8th, and Soriano pitched a 1-2-3 9th to earn his 28th save of the year.

Derek Jeter with another multi-hit game going 2 for 5 was able to reach the 150 hit mark for the season, and also knocked in 35th RBI.

Casey McGehee had his best game in pinstripes going 2 for 4 while hitting a three-run homerun in the 4th inning, and scoring a run in the 6th inning.

Catcher Chris Stewart continues to hit when he plays going 1 for 4 hitting his 7th double of the season.

Yankees will look for the sweep over the Blue Jays, as Phil Hughes (11-9, 4.10) will face J.A. Happ (0-1, 6.35).

Yankees Lose Despite Ninth Inning Rally

Yankees vs Tigers Post Game Recap 8/7

The Yankees were unable to beat the Tigers in the second game of the series despite a 9^th inning rally losing by a score of 6-5.

Yankees starter Phil Hughes had a short, and rough start only making it 4.1 innings against the Tigers. Hughes had a 42 pitch inning which really took its toll on his pitch count, and effectiveness for the game. Phil allowed eight hits, four runs, and had three strikeouts in his short night.

The next step for Joba Chamberlain didn’t go as smooth as he would or the Yankees would have liked on pitching two days straight. Joba in 0.2 innings allowed two hits, one walk, and one earned run in the eighth inning.

Miguel Cabrera has become a Yankee killer hitting another homerun on Tuesday for his 29^th of the season in the 4^th inning, and a two-run double in the 5^th inning.

Eric Chavez batting 5^th in the order responded with a big game going 2 for 4 with a two-run homerun in the 4^th, and scoring a run in the 9^th.

Ichiro also had a good day going 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and his hit his 18^th double of the season in the 9^th inning.

The return back to Detroit continues to be tough for Curtis Granderson going 0-5 again on Tuesday, as he has gone 0-10 to start the series.

Nick Swisher was able to have a nice 3 for 4 night hitting two doubles for his 25^th, and 26^th of the season. Swisher however was only knocked in once despite begin on base three times.

Yankees will turn to their ace C.C Sabathia (11-3, 3.53) to stop the skid, as he faces newly acquired Tiger Anibal Sanchez (1-1, 4.50).

Verlander Dominates Yankees to Start Series

The Yankees were unable to beat last years MVP Justin Verlander losing to the Tigers in the first game of the four game series 7-2.

Ivan Nova struggles continue since the All-Star break, as he picked up his 6^th loss of the season. Nova went 5.1 innings allowing eleven hits, seven runs, and had five strikeouts. In Novas last five starts he is (0-3) with a 8.36 ERA.

Joba Chamberlain was much better in his second appearance compared to his first, as Joba went 1.2 innings allowing two hits, and getting a strikeout.

Tigers starter Justin Verlander was very good on Monday night, as Verlander went eight innings allowing eight hits, one walk, two runs neither of which were earned, and fourteen strikeouts on 132 pitches.

Derek Jeter was able to go 2 for 5 with a RBI to keep his AL hits lead over Tigers Miguel Cabrera who had a 450ft homerun off Nova, but still trails Jeter by two hits on the year.

Robinson Cano was also able to have some success off Verlander going 2 for 4 with a RBI for his 64^th of the season.

Eric Chavez had the best day at the plate for the Yankees going 3 for 4 with two doubles giving him 10 now for the season, and scoring a run.

The hitting streak for Ichiro came to a end at 12 games, as Ichiro went 0 for 4 with his first three strikeouts since joining the Yankees.

Yankees will send Phil Hughes (11-8, 3.96) to the mound to face Rick Porcello (8-6, 4.65) in the second game of the series on Tuesday.

Yankees Avoid the Sweep

Yankees vs Orioles Post Game Recap 8/1

The Yankees were able to avoid the sweep at the hands of the Orioles, by winning Wednesdays matinee 12-3, and snapping their four game losing streak.

Phil Hughes was able to bend but not break in picking up 11^th win of the season. Hughes allowed nine hits, two walks, but only one earned run while striking out two batters.

Yankees fans got to see a familiar face as fan favorite Joba Chamberlain pitched for the first time in the majors in over a year. Joba however didn’t look very good on the mound in his return giving up four hits, two walks, and two earned runs including a solo shot to J.J Hardy on the second pitch he threw.

Captain Derek Jeter had a big day in the lead-off spot going 3 for 4 with a run scored, and three RBIs.

Curtis Granderson also played a very good game going 2 for 5 including hitting his 29^th home run of the season in the first inning.

Nick Swisher saw himself in the middle of the order batting in three hole, and produced going 2 for 4 scoring two runs, knocking in a RBI, and hit his 24^th double of the season.

Second baseman Robinson Cano provided the big hit of the game in the third inning hitting a Grand Slam off Kevin Gregg for his 24^th homerun of the season, and now has 62 RBIs.

Casey McGehee got his first start in pinstripes filling in for Mark Teixeira at first, and did a pretty good job at the plate drawing two walks, scoring two runs, and had two RBIs.

Jayson Nix got the start against the lefty Zach Britton, and was able to have himself a nice game in the bottom of the order going 3 for 4 with an RBI, and two runs scored.

The Yankees will be off on Thursday, and then will host the Mariners at home on Friday with C.C Sabathia (10-4, 3.57) and Kevin Millwood (4-8, 3.90) on the mound.

Yankees Crush Red Sox to Start Series

The New York Yankees fresh off a tough west coast trip were able to pick up a 10-3 win over the rival Boston Red Sox to start their home stand on a positive note, and shockingly the game was finished in under three hours a rare happening in a Yankees Red Sox game.

Phil Hughes was able to get his 10^th win of the season making him the 4^th Yankee starter to have double digit wins. Hughes had a very good start going seven innings allowing three runs, five hits, one walk, and had five strikeouts. The only concern about Phil's start would be the three homeruns he allowed, but they however were all solo shots.

Curtis Granderson was able to have a monster game on Friday night going 3 for 5 with two runs scored, four RBIs, and hit his 28^th homerun of the season a grand slam in the 8^th inning putting the dagger into the Red Sox.

Yankees left fielder Raul Ibanez also like Granderson had a big game against the Red Sox going 1 for 2 with a two-run homerun in the 3^rd inning for his 13^th of the season, and added two walks as well.

Russell Martin might finally have something going, as he went 1 for 3 hitting his 11^th homerun of the season in the 4^th inning, and also scored another run after drawing a walk.

MVP candidate Robinson Cano kept on doing more of the same going 2 for 5, and saw his batting average hit the .320 mark.

Ichiro Suzuki received a warm welcome in his first game at his new home in the Bronx, and went 1 for 4 with two runs scored.

Yankees will be looking for another win over the Red Sox on Saturday as C.C Sabathia (10-3, 3.30) will be facing the struggling Jon Lester (5-8, 5.46).

Yankees Shutdown again by Oakland Pitching

Yankees vs Athletics Post Game Recap 7/21

Yankees offensive struggles continued in Oakland as they lost to the Athletics for a third straight game by a score of 2-1 on Saturday.

Phil Hughes gave the Yankees a good start but with a lack of run support picked up his 8^th loss of the season. Hughes went 7.2 innings allowing only four hits, two walks, and two earned runs while striking out six batters. The long ball hurt Hughes again as Yoenis Cespedes, and Brandon Inge both took Hughes deep for Oakland’s two runs.

Oakland’s rookie Jarrod Parker was able to keep the Yankees bats in check only allowing one run, and five hits in eight innings of work picking up the win.

Robinson Cano saw his 23 game hitting streak come to a end on Saturday night, as Cano went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts.

Alex Rodriguez was one of the few Yankees to have a good day at the plate going 2 for 4 with run scored, and his 11^th stolen base of the season.

Raul Ibanez was the only Yankee to knock in a run with his base hit in the 4^th inning scoring Alex Rodriguez for his 41^st RBI of the year.

Yankees will try to avoid the four game sweep in Oakland on Sunday, as C.C Sabathia (10-3, 3.27) will face former teammate of last season Bartolo Colon (6-8, 3.88).

Yankees Lose Second Straight in Oakland

Yankees vs Athletics Post Game Recap 7/20

Yankees lost there second straight game on the west coast to the Oakland Athletics by a score of 3-2.

Ivan Nova was able to battle his way thru 6.2 innings keeping the Yankees in the game only allowing two runs on nine hits, and one walk while striking out six Oakland batters.

Cody Eppley struggled in the 9^th inning allowing three hits, and the game winning run picking up his first loss of the season.

Yoenis Cespedes continued to kill Yankee pitching going 4 for 5 on Friday night scoring the game winning run in the bottom of the 9^th.

Yankees hitters were shut down for the most part by Oakland’s rookie Tommy Milone who struck out ten batters in his seven innings of work while only allowing six hits.

Mark Teixeira was able to continue his hot hitting since the All-Star break going 2 for 3, as his average keeps heading north, as he is now at .256 for the year.

Robinson Cano kept the hitting streak alive from the DH spot hitting a single in the 7^th inning to extend it to 23 games, and hitting his 22^nd homerun of the season off Ryan Cook in the 9^th inning to tie the game at the time.

Russell Martin was able to hit his 10^th homerun of the season in the 8^th inning for the Yankees first run of the game, as Martin went 1 for 3 in the game.

Nick Swisher left the game in the 7^th inning with a hip injury which isn’t good news for the
Yankees if he has to miss much time as they found out Brett Gardner will most likely be out for the season needing elbow surgery.

The Yankees will look to win their first game in Oakland as Phil Hughes (9-7, 4.22) will face another Athletics rookie Jarrod Parker (6-4, 3.16).

Ibanez Powers Yankees Past Blue Jays

The Yankees were able to pick up the first game of the series with the Blue Jays winning by a score of 6-3.

Phil Hughes gave the Yankees a very good start, going seven innings allowing four hits, three walks, two earned runs, and recorded four strikeouts.

Rafael Soriano was needed to finish off the game as Cody Eppley allowed two base runners in the ninth inning, and was pulled by Girardi. Soriano gave up one hit but got the save for his 23rd of the year.

Alex Rodriguez who was a late scratch at third base with a stiff neck was still in the lineup as the DH, and went 2 for 4 with two runs scored.

Robinson Cano went 2 for 3 with a walk, run scored, and a RBI. With the two hits Cano extended his hitting streak to a career high 19 games.

Russell Martin might finally be showing signs of breaking his slump as he was able to hit his ninth homerun of the season, going 1 for 4 in the game.

Raul Ibanez provided the Yankees with the biggest hit of the night hitting a grand slam in the eighth inning breaking a 2-2 tie for his 12th home run of the season.

The Blue Jays Jose Bautista left the game in the eighth inning with a left wrist injury, and was replaced by Ben Francisco.

The Yankees will see the return of their ace C.C Sabathia (9-3, 3.45), as he faces Brett Cecil (2-1, 6.75).

Sloppy Yankees fall to Red Sox

Yankees vs Red Sox Post Game Recap 7/7 Game 2

The Yankees fell to the Red Sox in the second game of the double header, losing 9-5 as errors killed them.

Phil Hughes didn’t have his best stuff in the second game of the double header on Saturday, but sloppy fielding from the Yankees didn’t help either. Hughes allowed 10 hits, one walk resulting in five runs, three of which were earned in 5.1 innings. Hughes picked up his 7^th loss of the season as a result.

Boone Logan’s troubles continued, as he allowed one hit and two walks resulting in an earned run. This makes it four straight appearances for Boone allowing at least one run.

Cory Wade was back in the Yankees bullpen for the double header and picked up where he left off before he left. Wade allowed three hits, three runs, two of which were earned in 0.2 innings. Wade, who was pitching great in the first two months of the season, now sees his ERA at 5.94 for the year.

Mark Teixeira, back in a more normal spot in the lineup instead of batting 2nd, hit a three-run homerun in the 1^st inning for his 15^th homerun of the season.

Andruw Jones, who hit 2 homeruns in the first game of the double header, went 1-4 with another homerun, his 10^th of the season, in the night cap. Jones also made a great diving catch as well, flashing the abilities that led to 10 gold gloves as the Braves centerfielder earlier in his career.

Russell Martin was finally able to snap his 0-30 slump, going 1-2 with a walk and a double. He will now look to carry this into tomorrow night and the remainder of the season to get his average above .200.

Eric Chavez, who would pinch hit for Darnell McDonald, hit his 7^th homerun of the season in the 9^th inning. It was his second at bat of the night.

The Yankees will be playing the final game of the series against the Red Sox on ESPN for Sunday Night Baseball as Ivan Nova (9-3, 4.05) will face Jon Lester (5-5, 4.33).

Yankees vs. White Sox Post Game Recap 7/1

The New York Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox Sunday afternoon, and were able to salvage a series split with Chicago.

After a tough first inning, giving up two runs, Phil Hughes was able to settle down and give the Yankees another great start. Hughes went eight innings, allowed six hits, one walk and two first innings runs while striking out eight batters for his ninth win of the season.

Rafael Soriano came in and closed the door on the White Sox, striking out two batters, for his 18th save of the season.

Eric Chavez, getting the start for Alex Rodriguez at third base, was able to get the Yankees offense started with a two run homerun. It was his 6th homerun of the season and scored Raul Ibanez in the 2nd inning.

Robinson Cano, on the day he was named starting second baseman for the American League, continued his red hot hitting June into July, and belted his 20th homerun of the season. It was a two run blast scoring Mark Teixeira in the third inning.

Derek Jeter went 1 for 5 in Sunday’s game, seeing his batting average drop under the .300 mark to .299 as his June woes have hurt the captain’s batting average.

Russell Martin's struggles continued, going 0 for 4, as his average continues to head away from the Mendoza line sporting a .186 average now.

The Yankees will be heading down to Florida to face the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday, as Freddy Garcia (2-2, 6.39) will be starting for the Yankees against Matt Moore (4-5, 4.19).

Yankees vs. Indians Post Game Recap 6/26

The Yankees were able to pick up the 6-4 win over the Indians, winning the first two games in the series, and giving the Yankees a nice four game winning streak.

Phil Hughes was very good on Monday night, bouncing back from his poor performance against the Atlanta Braves when he gave up four homeruns. Hughes, in picking up his 8th win of the season, allowed six hits one walk and no runs in eight innings, while striking out four batters in a fantastic start.

Cory Wade continued to struggle as he gave up four hits and four runs, including a homerun in the 9th inning. Wade, who was used a lot when Rivera and Robertson went down with injuries, pitched very well in that time, but has now allowed runs in four of his last five appearances.

Rafael Soriano, who Girardi probably wasn’t planning on using going into the 9th with a six run lead, was needed to close the game after Wade gave up four runs. But with only two pitches, Soriano was able to get save number 16.

Chris Stewart, in his third straight start filling in for Russell Martin, was able to get a base hit and RBI in the 2nd inning. It was his 8th of the season and scored Nick Swisher on a liner that hit off a diving Jack Hannahans glove. Stewart would add a sac fly in the 8th inning for another RBI capping off a good night.

Curtis Granderson was able get a clutch base hit later in the 3rd inning with a bases loaded, scoring Stewart and Dewayne Wise and helping the Yankees rally with two outs.

Alex Rodriguez, fresh off a day off, was able to hit his 13th homerun of the season in the 7th inning off Tony Sipp.

Derek Jeter celebrated his 38th birthday with a solid 2-5 game getting two base hits with his family in attendance.

Like Jeter, Nick Swisher was able to get 2 hits, going 2-4 in the game and Swisher was able to score both times. Swisher got his average up to .272 on the season in the process.

The Yankees will be playing the final game of the series Wednesday afternoon looking for a sweep as Andy Pettitte (3-3, 3.29) will face Ubaldo Jimenez (7-5, 4.59).

Recap: Homer Happy Yanks Sweep Rival Mets

The New York Yankees showed New York fans that they are still the number one team in this city, with a sweep of the rival New York Mets.

On Friday night the Yankees took Johan Santana deep early and often. In the second inning, Robinson Cano took the first pitch he saw from Santana, and drove it into the right field seats for a two-run homer.

It did not take long for Cano to get to Santana again. In the third inning, Cano again smashed the first pitch he saw from Santana into the right field seats for another two-run home run, and gave the Yankees a 4-0 lead. Cano saw two pitches in his first two at-bats, and had two home runs and 4 RBI. The next two batters, Nick Swisher and Andruw Jones, both took Santana deep in their at-bats, and the Yankees hit back-to back-to back home runs.

The Yankees tacked on three more runs in the seventh inning and took the opening game 9-1.

Johan Santana, in his first start since his no-hitter, lasted five innings, gave up seven hits, six earned runs, and four home runs.

Hiroki Kuroda had another solid outing, going five and two thirds innings before surrendering a hit. Kuroda went seven innings , allowing just the one hit, and striking out seven Mets batters.

In game two, the Yankees again used the home run ball to get passed the Mets.

With the game tied at one in the sixth inning, David Wright took Phil Hughes deep to left center to give the Mets a 2-1 lead. It was Wright's eighth home run of the season, and the 15th home run given up by Hughes this season.

In the bottom half of the inning, with Curtis Granderson on base, Mark Teixeira hit a line drive over the right field wall and the Yankees went ahead 3-2.

Curtis Granderson added a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth off of Bobby Parnell and the Yankees won 4-2.

Phil Hughes went six and a third innings allowing six hits and two solo home runs, and got his sixth win of the season. Hughes has now given the Yankees three solid starts in a row, and besides giving up solo home runs, Hughes has been very strong.

In the series finale, the Mets jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on Andy Pettitte. Vinny Rottino singled home Scott Hairston to open the scoring in the second inning. Later in the second, Jordany Valdespin doubled to right scoring Rottino and Omar Quintanilla.

Pettitte held the Mets in check after the three run inning, and allowed the Yankees to mount a come back.

In the seventh inning the Yankees got on the board with a Russell Martin two-run homer, and cut the Mets lead to 3-2.

The Yankees took the lead in the bottom of the eighth with a pair of RBI singles from Teixeira and Rodriguez. After back to back singles by Jeter and Granderson, Teixeira laced a ball back up the middle to drive home Jeter. Rodriguez followed with a bloop single down the right field line that scored Granderson.

In the top of the ninth, the Yankees called on Rafael Soriano to close out the game, but Soriano could not. Before Soriano could record an out, Lucas Duda and Ike Davis hit back to back doubles, and the game was tied.  Boone Logan replaced Soriano and did not allow the Mets to score again, leaving the game tied at 4 headed into the bottom of the ninth.

It took just one batter for the Yankees to finish off the Mets, as Russell Martin took John Rauch out to left for his second home run of the game, a 5-4 win, and a series sweep.

The Yankees took all three games against the Mets in the Subway Series, and except for Friday night's blowout, the series was an exciting one for both sides, although Mets fans would have felt better with at least one win.

The two teams will meet again in two weeks at Citi Field, and the Mets will have a chance to get revenge for the three game sweep they suffered at Yankee Stadium this past weekend.
