Yankees Season Rests on Arm of Hughes

With the Yankees in an 0-2 hole in the American League Championship Series, Joe Girardi will depend on Phil Hughes to save the Bombers season. 

The Yankees will be in Detroit for Game 3 tonight against the Tigers, and feel that maybe going on the road to play will help the team loosen up and get out of their offensive funk. The Yankee offense has been non existent this postseason, and have now put the Yankees two games away from elimination, and every game becoming a must win. So, much for loosening up at the plate. The Yankees lineup has struggled from top to bottom, with few bright spots. 

Raul Ibanez has carried the Yankee offense this postseason with three home runs, all coming in the ninth inning or later to to tie or win the game. Ichiro Suzuki has also been hot at the plate, especially in the ALCS. Suzuki is hitting .400 with a home run and two RBI. After Suzuki and Ibanez, no Yankee is hitting above .250 this series, and have combined for zero home runs along with zero RBI. 

The Yankee pitching has kept this team in the postseason, and still give the Yankees hope if they can continue to keep the Tigers lineup at bay. Tonight the task of taming the Tigers is given to Phil Hughes. In Hughes' ALDS start, he went 6 2/3 innings, giving up four hits, striking out eight, and the only run he allowed was a solo home run. 

Hughes will be facing the reigning AL Cy Young and AL MVP winner Justin Verlander tonight. Hughes faced Verlander in Detroit during the regular season, and out dueled Verlander with a complete game. Hughes allowed four hits and a solo home run in the Yankees 5-1 win over the Tigers. Unfortunately for Hughes, he will have to put up a similar performance tonight, and hope the Yankee bats can get him any kind of run support. 

Every game has become do or die for the Yankees, and a loss tonight in Detroit spells the end of the season for the Bronx Bombers who have been anything but. If the Yankees need some inspiration to climb out of this hole they have dug, perhaps they should look at the 2004 ALCS where they were up three games to none on the Boston Red Sox, and ended losing the series 4-3. 

Game 3 between the Yankees and Tigers will start at 8:00 pm tonight.

Yankees Take Rubber Game Against Indians

Yankees vs. Indians Post Game Recap 8/26

The New York Yankees were able to beat the Indians by a score of 4-2 to take the rubber game in a series that the Yankees really need to win after being swept by the White Sox.

Yankees starter Freddy Garcia was ok in picking up the no decision but surely Girardi would have liked to him last longer in the game. Garcia went 4.2 innings allowing four hits, two walks, two runs, and had six strikeouts.

The bullpen was great for the Yankees and that started with Boone Logan in the 5th inning getting out of the jam he was brought into he then proceeded to pitch another 1.1 innings without allowing a run. David Robertson was brought in next and finished up the 7th inning and got the first two outs in the 8th.  Rafael Soriano was able to pick up his 33rd save of the season by getting the final four outs of the game.

Nick Swisher has found his groove batting in front of Cano, as Swisher went 3 for 4 hitting his 30th double of the season, and knocking in his 73 RBI.

Robinson Cano was able to have his second straight multi-hit game going 2 for 3 with his 36th double of the season, and a walk.

Curtis Granderson was able to hit his 200th career homerun in the 6th inning off Tony Sipp, and it was Granderson’s 33rd homerun of the year.

Ichiro was able to have another nice game in the 8th spot going 2 for 4 with a run scored, and knocked in his 42nd RBI of the season.

The Yankees will be heading home to face the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday, as David Phelps (3-4, 2.69) will be taking Ivan Nova’s spot in the rotation and will facing Ricky Romero (8-11, 5.63).

Yankees vs. Red Sox Post Game Recap 8/19

The Yankees were able to beat the Red Sox in the rubber game of the series by a score of 4-1 to finish of a very good home-stand.

Hiroki Kuroda showed against the Red Sox that he is the Yankees best pitcher right now earning his 12th game of the year. Kuroda went eight innings allowing four hits, one run, and struck out four. The only run the Red Sox were able to score off Kuroda came from an Adrian Gonzalez solo homerun.

Rafael Soriano was the only other pitcher needed in the bullpen, as Soriano pitched the 9th inning earning his 31st save of the season.

Derek Jeter the majors hitting leader added some more going 3 for 4 with two doubles giving him 26 on the season, and scoring two runs. Jeter also stole his 8th base of the season taking third base on a double steal.

Ichiro had his best game as a Yankee on Sunday going 3 for 4 hitting two solo homeruns into right field for his 6th and 7th of the season.

Curtis Granderson had a nice game in the cleanup spot with no Mark Teixeira going 1 for 2 with a RBI double for his 14th double and 71st RBI. Granderson was also able to draw two walks.

The Yankees will be heading to the Windy City to play the White Sox, as Freddy Garcia (7-5, 4.68) will face Gavin Floyd (9-9, 4.43) on Monday night.

Yankees Unable to Sweep Rangers

Yankees vs. Rangers Post Game Recap 8/16

The Yankees were unable to pull of the four game sweep over the Rangers, as the great Texas lineup came alive beating the Yankees 10-6.

Ivan Nova was not able to replicate his last start, as the Rangers bats got to Nova.  Ivan went 5.2 innings allowing seven hits, four walks, and four runs in the no decision.

The bullpen had one of its worse days of the seasons allowing six runs in the final 3.1 innings. Cody Eppley, Boone Logan, Joba Chamberlain, and Clay Rapada all gave up one run with Chamberlain and Logan each giving up two runs.

Derek Jeter was able to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, as Jeter went 2 for 5 with a RBI, and run scored. Jeter did benefit from a hometown call on one of the hits could have been a fielders choice and an error on Elvis Andrus.

Andruw Jones batting cleanup with no Cano or Granderson in the lineup was able to hit a two-run shot in the 6th inning for his 13th of the season.

After a 3 for 3 day with his 20th double of the year, and a run scored Ichiro is now batting over .300 since joining the Yankees making it seem that him batting 8th may not be lasting much longer.

The best rivalry in baseball will add another chapter with the 4th place Red Sox coming to town with their playoff hopes in jeopardy, as Phil Hughes (11-10, 4.44) will face Franklin Morales (3-3, 3.29).

Garcia Shines in Win Over Rangers

The Yankees were able overcome a long rain delay to get their third straight win over the Texas Rangers beating them 3-2.

Freddy Garcia was very good against the frightening Texas lineup in earning his 7th win of the season. Garcia went 6.2 innings allowing four hits, one walk, two runs, and had six strikeouts. The only runs Texas was able to manufacture were from MVP candidate Josh Hamilton who took Garcia deep twice for two solo homeruns in the 4th and 6th innings.

The formula worked for the Yankees in the bullpen, as David Robertson pitched a scoreless 8th striking out two batters, and Rafael Soriano was able to pickup his 29th save of the season going thru the heart of the Rangers lineup.

Derek Jeter was able to extend his hitting streak to 11 games going 1 for 4 with a walk, and a run scored.

Nick Swisher was able to drive in another run making it 9 RBIs in the last 4 games, as Swisher went 1 for 5 while hitting his 28th double of the season.

Eric Chavez is making Yankees fans quickly forget that Alex Rodriguez is even hurt, as after a 3 for 3 day with a RBI at the plate Chavez is now hitting .303 on the season.

Ichiro and Jayson Nix were both able to produce from the bottom of the order, as each went 2 for 4 with Nix scoring a run, and stealing his 4th base of the year.

Yankees will be looking for what could be a very impressive four game sweep over the Rangers on Thursday afternoon, as Ivan Nova (11-6, 4.70) will face Derek Holland (7-6, 4.92).

Yankees Hang 10 on Blue Jays

Yankees vs Blue Jays Post Game Recap 8/10

The Yankees were able to win their third straight game by beating Toronto 10-4 to start the series up north.

Yankees Starter Freddy Garcia was able to give the Yankees a quality start to earn his 6^th win of the season. Freddy went six innings allowing five hits, two runs, and had four strikeouts. Kelly Johnson was the only problem for Garcia, as Johnson had a solo homerun, and a RBI double against Garcia.

Yankees offense was clicking in Toronto overall scoring 10 runs, and having 4 players with multi-hit games.

Captain Derek Jeter continued his good hitting with another multi-hit game going 2 for 5, and scoring a run in the lead-off spot.

Nick Swisher had a nice game behind Jeter in the order going 2 for 5 as well with two runs scored, and hit his 27^th double of the season getting a RBI.

Mark Teixeira was able to go deep in the 8^th inning for his 22^nd homerun of the year off Steve Delabar to give the Yankees some breathing room at the time.

Robinson Cano was another Yankee with a multi-hit game going 2 for 4 with a walk, a RBI, and scored two runs.

Ichiro Suzuki got his first start in center field since 2008, and had his best game as a Yankee to going 2 for 5 with a big five RBIs, and hit his 19^th double of the season.

Russell Martin is creeping toward the .200 mark for the season after going 1 for 3 with a walk, and scoring a run.

Yankees will send the struggling Ivan Nova (10-6, 4.81) to the mound to face Aaron Laffey (3-2, 4.39) as Yankees look to make it four straight wins.

Yankees Lose Despite Ninth Inning Rally

The Yankees were unable to beat the Tigers in the second game of the series despite a 9^th inning rally losing by a score of 6-5.

Yankees starter Phil Hughes had a short, and rough start only making it 4.1 innings against the Tigers. Hughes had a 42 pitch inning which really took its toll on his pitch count, and effectiveness for the game. Phil allowed eight hits, four runs, and had three strikeouts in his short night.

The next step for Joba Chamberlain didn’t go as smooth as he would or the Yankees would have liked on pitching two days straight. Joba in 0.2 innings allowed two hits, one walk, and one earned run in the eighth inning.

Miguel Cabrera has become a Yankee killer hitting another homerun on Tuesday for his 29^th of the season in the 4^th inning, and a two-run double in the 5^th inning.

Eric Chavez batting 5^th in the order responded with a big game going 2 for 4 with a two-run homerun in the 4^th, and scoring a run in the 9^th.

Ichiro also had a good day going 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and his hit his 18^th double of the season in the 9^th inning.

The return back to Detroit continues to be tough for Curtis Granderson going 0-5 again on Tuesday, as he has gone 0-10 to start the series.

Nick Swisher was able to have a nice 3 for 4 night hitting two doubles for his 25^th, and 26^th of the season. Swisher however was only knocked in once despite begin on base three times.

Yankees will turn to their ace C.C Sabathia (11-3, 3.53) to stop the skid, as he faces newly acquired Tiger Anibal Sanchez (1-1, 4.50).

Verlander Dominates Yankees to Start Series

The Yankees were unable to beat last years MVP Justin Verlander losing to the Tigers in the first game of the four game series 7-2.

Ivan Nova struggles continue since the All-Star break, as he picked up his 6^th loss of the season. Nova went 5.1 innings allowing eleven hits, seven runs, and had five strikeouts. In Novas last five starts he is (0-3) with a 8.36 ERA.

Joba Chamberlain was much better in his second appearance compared to his first, as Joba went 1.2 innings allowing two hits, and getting a strikeout.

Tigers starter Justin Verlander was very good on Monday night, as Verlander went eight innings allowing eight hits, one walk, two runs neither of which were earned, and fourteen strikeouts on 132 pitches.

Derek Jeter was able to go 2 for 5 with a RBI to keep his AL hits lead over Tigers Miguel Cabrera who had a 450ft homerun off Nova, but still trails Jeter by two hits on the year.

Robinson Cano was also able to have some success off Verlander going 2 for 4 with a RBI for his 64^th of the season.

Eric Chavez had the best day at the plate for the Yankees going 3 for 4 with two doubles giving him 10 now for the season, and scoring a run.

The hitting streak for Ichiro came to a end at 12 games, as Ichiro went 0 for 4 with his first three strikeouts since joining the Yankees.

Yankees will send Phil Hughes (11-8, 3.96) to the mound to face Rick Porcello (8-6, 4.65) in the second game of the series on Tuesday.

Yankees vs Mariners Post Game Recap 8/5

The Yankees were able to win the rubber game of the series with the Mariners winning on Sunday by a score of 6-2.

Yankees starter Freddy Garcia was solid in picking up his 5^th win of the season. Garcia went five innings allowing five hits, four walks, and only two runs while striking out two.

The bullpen was outstanding on Sunday afternoon as Boone Logan, David Robertson, and Rafael Soriano went a combined four scoreless innings, and only Robertson allowed a base runner on a walk in the 8^th inning.

Derek Jeter was able to have another multi-hit game going 2 for 5 with a RBI, and run scored. Jeter is leading the A.L in hits with 140 now after picking up two more on Sunday.

Raul Ibanez had a big game knocking in half of the Yankees runs for the game, as Ibanez hit a monster 430ft two-run homerun in the 5^th inning. Ibanez would also pick up another RBI on a single the next inning capping off a nice 2 for 4 day.

Catcher Chris Stewart did a good job producing from the ninth spot in the order going 2 for 3 with a walk, and three runs scored.

Ichiro was able to extend his hitting streak since coming to the Yankees to 12 games with some help from the sun on his double in the 7^th inning.

Yankees will be heading to Detroit on Monday, as Ivan Nova (10-5, 4.53) will face Justin Verlander (11-7, 2.63) to start a four game series.

Yankees vs Mariners Post Game Recap 8/4

The Yankees were unable to win the second game of the series against the Mariners, as King Felix shut down the Yankees bats in a 1-0 Mariners win.

Felix Hernandez was nothing short of exceptional on Saturday throwing a complete game shutout in the Bronx. Hernandez went the full nine innings while only allowing two hits, two walks, and had six strikeouts.

Hiroki Kuroda was very good on Saturday as well, but couldn’t outduel Felix Hernandez picking up his 8^th loss of the year. Kuroda went 6.1 innings allowing seven hits, one walk, one earned run, and struckout four batters.

Ichiro had one of the hits for the Yankees against Felix, as Ichiro went 1 for 3 extending his hitting streak to 11 games now.

Robinson Cano was the other Yankee to get a hit in the game, as Cano was able to hit his 31^st double of the season in the 1^st inning.

Yankees will look to score some runs, and win the rubber game of the series on Sunday as Freddy Garcia (4-5, 5.10) will face Hisashi Iwakuma (2-2, 4.10).

Yankees Lose Third Straight

The New York Yankees suffered their third straight loss in the series opener of the series against the Baltimore Orioles by a score of 5-4.

Freddy Garcia was able to give the Yankees an ok start on Monday night despite picking up his 5^th loss of the season. Garcia went six innings allowing nine hits, three runs, and had two strikeouts in the losing effort.

July continued to be a tough month for Boone Logan as in 2/3 innings Logan allowed two earned runs on one hit, and one walk.

Yankees injury woes happened again this time to Mark Teixeira who left the game with an apparent wrist injury. Teixeira wasn’t doing well at the plate on Monday going 0 for 3 with three strikeouts but the Yankees could be in big trouble if he is out for an extended period of time.

Eric Chavez had a big game going 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and hit his ninth homerun of the season a solo shot in the seventh inning.

Ichiro was able to hit his 1^st homerun in pinstripes going back to back with Chavez for his 100^th of his career and fifth of the season in the seventh inning . Suzuki was also able to steal his 18^th base of the season after reaching on a fielders choice.

Left fielder Raul Ibanez also was able to hit a homerun for his 14^th of the season in the 5^th inning, as Ibanez hit well going 2 for 4.

Yankees will look to snap there losing streak and hopefully have Teixeira in the lineup on Tuesday as Ivan Nova (10-4, 4.08) will face Chris Tillman (3-1, 1.66).

Yankees Lose in Extras to Red Sox

The Yankees suffered yet another tough loss to the Red Sox this time coming in extra innings losing the game 3-2, and the series at home as well.

Hiroki Kuroda pitched a very good game for the Yankees in the no decision, as the double play ball was Kuroda's best friend getting four Red Sox to ground into one. Kuroda finished the night going eight innings allowing seven hits, one walk, two earned runs, and had four strikeouts.

David Robertson had a tough time of it in the 10^th inning picking up his 4^th loss of the season. He allowed two hits, one walk, and the eventual game winning run to score on a Pedro Ciriaco single.

Russell Martin had one of his best games of the season going 2 for 2 with two walks, and two RBIs. Martin was able to his 12^th homerun of the season in the 7^th inning, and followed it up in the 8^th with a RBI single scoring Andruw Jones as Martin Knocked in the only two Yankee runs.

Yankees saw Nick Swisher back in the starting lineup in as the DH after missing a few games, and Swisher was able to go 2 for 4 with two strikeouts.

Ichiro Suzuki was able to keep his hitting streak as a Yankee alive going 1 for 4, and stole his 17^th base of the season.

The big bats in the Yankees order in Granderson, Teixeira, and Cano all had rough games going a combined 0-14 with only Granderson making it on base from a walk.

Yankees will look to bounce back from losing the series with the Red Sox on Monday as the Orioles will be in town, as Freddy Garcia (4-4, 5.16) will face Miguel Gonzalez (2-2, 4.28).

Yankees Crush Red Sox to Start Series

The New York Yankees fresh off a tough west coast trip were able to pick up a 10-3 win over the rival Boston Red Sox to start their home stand on a positive note, and shockingly the game was finished in under three hours a rare happening in a Yankees Red Sox game.

Phil Hughes was able to get his 10^th win of the season making him the 4^th Yankee starter to have double digit wins. Hughes had a very good start going seven innings allowing three runs, five hits, one walk, and had five strikeouts. The only concern about Phil's start would be the three homeruns he allowed, but they however were all solo shots.

Curtis Granderson was able to have a monster game on Friday night going 3 for 5 with two runs scored, four RBIs, and hit his 28^th homerun of the season a grand slam in the 8^th inning putting the dagger into the Red Sox.

Yankees left fielder Raul Ibanez also like Granderson had a big game against the Red Sox going 1 for 2 with a two-run homerun in the 3^rd inning for his 13^th of the season, and added two walks as well.

Russell Martin might finally have something going, as he went 1 for 3 hitting his 11^th homerun of the season in the 4^th inning, and also scored another run after drawing a walk.

MVP candidate Robinson Cano kept on doing more of the same going 2 for 5, and saw his batting average hit the .320 mark.

Ichiro Suzuki received a warm welcome in his first game at his new home in the Bronx, and went 1 for 4 with two runs scored.

Yankees will be looking for another win over the Red Sox on Saturday as C.C Sabathia (10-3, 3.30) will be facing the struggling Jon Lester (5-8, 5.46).

Nix Pushes Yankees Past Mariners

Yankees vs. Mariners Post Game Recap 7/25

The New York Yankees were able to finish a poor west coast trip on a positive note with a 5-2 win over the Seattle Mariners winning the three game series.

Yankees starter Ivan Nova was a bit wild on Wednesday afternoon walking six batters leading to a short five inning outing for Nova. Ivan despite the high number of walks only gave up two hits, and two runs in the no decision.

New York’s bullpen was great picking up Nova after a short start going a scoreless four innings. Clay Rapada was the first pitcher in a may have had the most important pitch of the game getting a double play ball after inheriting two runners with no outs. David Phelps came in and got the last out of the 6th, and picked up his second win of the season. Rafael Soriano was the only pitcher in the bullpen to allow hit, but was able to pick up his 26th save of the season.

Yankees Captain Derek Jeter was back in the number two spot where he spent a majority of his career, and had a huge game. Jeter went 3 for 4 with two runs scored, one RBI and hit his 8th homerun of the season a solo shot in the first inning.

Ichiro Suzuki was moved up in the order after batting in the eight spot got moved to leadoff, and went 1 for 5 and was caught stealing for the third time this season.

Jayson Nix had the biggest hit of the night for the Yankees pinch hitting for Raul Ibanez in the 8th inning. Nix hit a bases clearing double his 7th of the season with the bases loaded giving the Yankees a 4-2 lead.

Yankees will be off on Thursday traveling back to New York for a huge weekend series with the Red Sox starting Friday, as Phil Hughes (9-8, 4.09) will face Aaron Cook (2-3, 3.50).

Yankees West Coast Struggles Continue

The Yankees west coast struggles continued in Seattle losing to the Mariners, and ace Felix Hernandez by a score of 4-2.

Freddy Garcia was good for the Yankees going 7 1/3 innings pitched despite getting his fourth loss of the season and second straight. Garcia allowed five hits, three runs, and struck out eight batters.

Getting the final two outs in the eighth inning was and adventure after Garcia struck out Brendan Ryan, as Girardi had to use four pitchers to get the final two outs of the as Clay Rapada, Chad Qualls, Boone Logan, and Cody Eppley all made appearances before Eppley was able to get the final out of the inning.

Curtis Granderson was able to hit his 27th homerun in the first inning off King Felix, and finished 2 for 4 with two strikeouts in the game.

The Yankees suffered another big injury blow as Alex Rodriguez suffered a broken left hand in the eighth inning after getting hit by a pitch from Felix Hernandez who also hit Derek Jeter earlier in the inning, and former teammate Ichiro in the seventh.

Despite not getting a hit, Mark Teixeira was able to knock in another RBI for his 67th of the season with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning.

In a game where the Yankees weren’t able to muster much offensively, newly acquired Ichiro was able to get another hit, as Ichiro went 1 for 3 in the game hitting his 16th double of the season off Hernandez.

Yankees will be looking to try and salvage the west coast trip by winning the rubber game of the series with the Mariners Wednesday afternoon as Ivan Nova (10-4, 4.10) will be facing Hisashi Iwakuma (1-2, 4.86).

Yankees Win in Ichiros Debut

The New York Yankees were able to snap their 4 game losing streak after being swept by the Oakland Athletics by beating the Mariners 4-1

Hiroki Kuroda was great in picking up his 10^th win of the season going seven innings allowing three hits, one walk, one run, and struckout nine batters.

Yankees closer Rafael Soriano was able to get right back on track a day after blowing his second save of the season, Soriano put the Mariners down in order to earn his 25^th save of the season.

The big news before the game was the trade between the two teams that sent Ichiro to the Yankees for two prospects. Ichiro was batting 8^th and wearing the number 31 for the Yankees, and wasted little time getting his 1^st hit in pinstripes in his first at bat. Ichiro stole second right after the hit for his 16^th stolen base of the season as he went 1 for 4 in his Yankee debut.

Former Mariner Alex Rodriguez was able to show off his power that landed him a big contract against his former team. Rodriguez went 2 for 4 hitting his 14^th double of the season, and his 15^th homerun.

Mark Teixeira was able to tack on to his team lead in RBIs with a double in the 4^th inning for his 66^th of the season, as Mark had a great night at the plate going 3 for 4 with two doubles.

Curtis Granderson was the odd man out in the Yankee lineup as he was the only starter who was unable to get a hit off Mariner pitching going 0 for 4 with three strikeouts.

Former Yankee Jesus Montero who was traded for Michael Pineda didn’t fair very well in the series opener going 0 for 4 with a strikeout, and grounded into a double play.

Mariners will see another familiar face on Tuesday night as Freddy Garcia (4-3, 5.37) will be on the mound for the Yankees against Mariners ace Felix Hernandez (5-8, 2.82).

Yankees Trade for Ichiro Suzuki

Yankees Trade for Ichiro

The New York Yankees got a big name outfielder by trading for Seattle Mariners Ichiro Suzuki a few hours before they start a three game series in Seattle. The trade will be sending two Yankee pitching prospects in D.J Mitchell, and Danny Farquhar to Seattle, and will be sending the 10 time All-Star Ichiro to the Yankees.

Ichiro has seen a decline in his hitting over the past year and a half, as his averaged dropped to .272 in 2011, and is only at .261 this season with a OBP under .300. Mariners have not had much protection for Ichiro or have then been very competitive so a move to a contender maybe just what Ichiro needs to get back on track as he is an all-time great hitter. Ichiro does however bring some speed back to the Yankees right now, as Ichiro has 15 stolen bases while on being caught twice this season.

The addition of Ichiro was brought on in large part to the season ending elbow injury for Brett Gardner. Ichiro has been mostly in right field or center field in his career, as he is a great defender and making a switch to left will definitely be an adjustment for the gold glover.
