Yankees vs. Blue Jays Post Game Recap 8/27

The Yankees suffered a tough extra innings loss to the Blue Jays losing to the Jays 8-7 in 11 innings after having the lead most of the game.

David Phelps did a good job filling in for Ivan Nova, as Phelps left the game in position to pick up the win. Phelps went 6.1 innings allowing five hits, one walk, four runs, and had seven strikeouts. The long ball did hurt Phelps a bit, as he gave up a solo shot to Adam Lind, and a two-run shot to Yorit Torrealba.

It looked like the Yankees were on their way to the win with a two run lead in the 9th and Rafael Soriano on the mound but he was unable to get it done. Soriano gave up a three-run homerun to Colby Rasmus which gave the Blue Jays a 7-6 lead at the time.

Derek Lowe picked up the loss in extras, as a costly error by Lowe on a pickoff attempt to first base allowed Mike McCoy to go to third base and later scored the game winning run.

Captain Clutch Derek Jeter was able to come thru in a big spot hitting a game tying solo homerun in the bottom of the 9th inning for his 14th homer of the season.

Nick Swisher was able to hit a two-run shot in the 5th inning for his 20th homerun of the season, but was 1 for 6 in the game with three strikeouts.

Robinson Cano is heating up at the right time for the Yankees now, as Cano was able to hit two solo homeruns for his 26th and 27th homeruns of the season.

Eric Chavez when in the lineup continues to play well going 3 for 4 with a walk, and run scored.

The Yankees may have suffered another big injury blow to the team as Mark Teixeira left the game in the 4th inning with a grade 1 calf strain and is expected to miss some time.

The Yankees will look to rebound after the tough loss, as Phil Hughes (12-11, 4.15) will face Ricky Romero (8-11, 5.63).

Yankees vs. Indians Post Game Recap 8/26

The New York Yankees were able to beat the Indians by a score of 4-2 to take the rubber game in a series that the Yankees really need to win after being swept by the White Sox.

Yankees starter Freddy Garcia was ok in picking up the no decision but surely Girardi would have liked to him last longer in the game. Garcia went 4.2 innings allowing four hits, two walks, two runs, and had six strikeouts.

The bullpen was great for the Yankees and that started with Boone Logan in the 5th inning getting out of the jam he was brought into he then proceeded to pitch another 1.1 innings without allowing a run. David Robertson was brought in next and finished up the 7th inning and got the first two outs in the 8th.  Rafael Soriano was able to pick up his 33rd save of the season by getting the final four outs of the game.

Nick Swisher has found his groove batting in front of Cano, as Swisher went 3 for 4 hitting his 30th double of the season, and knocking in his 73 RBI.

Robinson Cano was able to have his second straight multi-hit game going 2 for 3 with his 36th double of the season, and a walk.

Curtis Granderson was able to hit his 200th career homerun in the 6th inning off Tony Sipp, and it was Granderson’s 33rd homerun of the year.

Ichiro was able to have another nice game in the 8th spot going 2 for 4 with a run scored, and knocked in his 42nd RBI of the season.

The Yankees will be heading home to face the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday, as David Phelps (3-4, 2.69) will be taking Ivan Nova’s spot in the rotation and will facing Ricky Romero (8-11, 5.63).

Yankees vs Red Sox Post Game Recap 8/18

The Yankees were unable to make it two straight wins over the rival Red Sox losing by a score of 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.

David Phelps was able to have his longest outing of his major league career, but a lack of run support lead to his 4^th loss of the season. Phelps went 6.2 innings allowing seven hits, three runs, and had seven strikeouts.

Jon Lester has struggled this year not pitching anywhere near his capabilities, but Lester looked like his old self against the Yankees going seven innings only allowing five hits, and one run.

Pedro Ciriaco has become a Yankee killer going 4 for 4 with a double, stolen base, and run scored. Ciriaco is now 15 for 29 against the Yankees this year.

Derek Jeter's 13 game hitting streak came to end, as Jeter went 0 for 3 with a walk in the loss.

Nick Swisher's hot hitting on the home-stand continued going 3 for 4, as Swisher is now 10 for 24 with 4 homeruns and 11 RBIs.

Curtis Granderson was the only Yankees to cross home plate in the game, as Granderson was able to hit a solo homerun for his 32^nd homerun of the season, and also hit his 13^th double of the season.

Yankees will look to take the rubber game of the series on Sunday Night Baseball, as Hiroki Kuroda (11-8, 3.06) will face Josh Beckett (5-10, 5.19).

Yankees Power Past Red Sox

Yankees vs. Red Sox Post Game Recap 8/17

The Yankees were able to take the series opener with the rival Red Sox beating them 6-4 on Friday night.

Phil Hughes was able to pickup his 12th win of the season bouncing back nicely from his bad start in Toronto. Hughes went seven innings allowing four hits, one walk, and four unearned runs. The third inning was where Hughes saw trouble giving up four unearned after a throwing error on him, the Red Sox were able to rally with Dustin Pedroia doing the major damage hitting a three-run homerun.

Rafael Soriano has become a sure thing in the 9th inning, as Soriano picked up his 30th save of the season putting the Red Sox down in order to end the game.

Derek Jeter was able to extend his hitting streak to 13 games with a milestone homerun for his 250th of his career, and 10th of the season.

Nick Swisher had a big day going 2 for 3 with a walk, and two solo homeruns for his 17th and 18th homeruns of the season.

Curtis Granderson also went deep for his 31st homerun of the season in the 2nd inning, as Granderson went 2 for 4.

Russell Martin went back to back with Granderson in the 2nd inning for his 13th of the season.

Yankees offense has scored in large part due to homeruns this season, and with five solo shots against the Red Sox including Jeter’s 10th of the season the Yankees now have 10 players with double digit homeruns.

The Yankees will look for another win over the Red Sox to continue to bury their playoff hopes, as David Phelps (3-3, 2.53) will face Jon Lester (6-10, 5.20) on Saturday afternoon.

Swisher's slam leads Yanks past Rangers

Nick Swisher hit his 200th career home run Monday night, a grand slam to be exact, and it pushed the Yankees past the American League West leading Texas Rangers.

The Yankees were trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning when Nick Swisher stepped up with the bases full of Yankees. Swisher took a Ryan Dempster pitch and drove it into the second deck in right field to give the Yankees a 4-2 lead. It was Swisher's 15th homer of the season. Swisher finished the game going 2 for 4 with 5 RBI, and a run scored.

The Yankees loaded the bases once again in the third, but could only push one more run across with a sacrifice fly by Curtis Granderson.

David Phelps put the Yankees in a hole early giving up runs in the first two innings, but that is all the Rangers would get the rest of the game.Phelps went five innings allowing six hits, two runs, and striking out three Rangers batters while picking up his third win of the season.


Newly acquired Derek Lowe relieved Phelps, and went four innings, allowing no runs and recorded his first save since August 2001, a four inning save.

Texas Rangers starter Ryan Dempster has struggled since coming over from the National League. In his first three starts with the Rangers, Dempster has given up 24 hits, and 16 earned runs. In his previous seven starts, while with the Cubs, Dempster gave up only seven runs.

Eric Chavez continued his hot hitting while replacing the injured Alex Rodriguez. Chavez went 2 for 4 with one RBI, and a run scored, and hit his 13th home run of the season.

Chavez has been on fire since replacing Rodriguez at the end of July. Since July 30th, Chavez is hitting .471 (16 for 34), with five home runs, 10 RBI, and 10 runs scored. Chavez's production has help eased the loss of Rodriguez's bat in the lineup, and the power numbers between the two are not far apart.

Chavez has hit 13 home runs in 198 at bats, while Rodriguez has hit only 15 home runs in 352 at bats this season.

The Yankees and Rangers continue their series tonight at Yankee Stadium at 7 p.m. Hiroki Kuroda (10-8 3.24) will be on the hill for the Yankees, while Matt Harrison (13-6 3.31) will go for the Rangers.

Yankees Unable to Sweep Blue Jays

The Yankees had their 4 game winning streak snapped by the Blue Jays who were able to avoid the sweep beating the Yankees 10-7.

Yankees starter Phil Hughes had a very bad start against a lineup that he should have dominated losing his 10^th game of the season. Hughes was only able to go four innings allowing nine hits, one walk, and seven runs.

New call-up Ryota Igarashi didn’t pitch very well coming in after Hughes letting the Blue Jays extend the lead even more. Igarashi pitched two innings allowing three hit, one walk, and three runs.

Blue Jays left fielder Rajai Davis had a career day against the Yankees going 2 for 5 with five RBIs, a run scored, and a stolen base. Davis also make a spectacular catch robbing Casey McGehee of a homerun in the 7^th inning.

Derek Jeter continues to his hot hitting going 3 for 5. Jeter ripped his 23^rd double of the season knocking in a run, and hit a solo shot in the sixth inning for his ninth homerun of the season.

Robinson Cano was also able to hit a homerun in the sixth inning, a two-run shot scoring Nick Swisher for his 25^th homerun of the season.

Nick Swisher was able to have a nice multi-hit game going 2 for 5 while scoring a run, and knocking in Jeter for his 58^th RBI of the season.

Catcher Russell Martin was the only Yankee starter that wasn’t able to get at least one hit going 0 for 4, as he had a shot to get above the .200 mark in the game but was unable to get a hit.

The Yankees will be heading home to start a big seven game home-stand against the Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox. The Yankees will start the series with Texas on Monday as it is believed David Phelps (2-3, 2.42) will take C.C Sabathias start, and will face Ryan Dempster (1-0, 6.35).

Yankees Acquire Derek Lowe

The New York Yankees wasted no time finding another arm to pitch while C.C Sabathia is on the DL with elbow inflammation acquiring the 39 year old Derek Lowe.

Lowe was pitching for the Cleveland Indians before being designated for assignment on Saturday. He wasn’t pitching very well for the Indians in their rotation going 8-10 with a 5.52 ERA. Lowe has however had a good 16 year career going 174-156 with a 4.01 lifetime ERA, and will be able to eat innings for the Yankees.

The Yankees will be using Lowe out of the bullpen in the absence of Sabathia, as David Phelps will be getting the start on Monday which is well deserved. The Yankees have a tough road ahead of them without Sabathia, as Baltimore and Tampa Bay are getting closer in the standings.

C.C Sabathia Headed to DL

Yankees suffered another injury blow to the team as ace C.C Sabathia will be heading to the 15 day disabled list for the second time this season. Sabathia will be heading to the DL this time due to stiffness in his elbow. The elbow first started acting up in Seattle, and continued to give him issues in Detroit when he only threw 94 pitches.

"As far as our concern, it's pretty low," Girardi said. "It's not like it got any worse. He wants to pitch on Monday, which I'm not surprised, because he said he's dealt with it before. We just decided, let's try to get it cleaned up now."

Sabathia was on the DL in the end of June and into July with a groin injury that cost him to miss 3 starts. C.C is 12-3 on the season with a 3.56 ERA, and has thrown 141.2 innings.

It appears that David Phelps will be getting Sabathia’s start on Monday against Texas, as Phelps has been great so far this season in the bullpen and making a few starts. Phelps is 2-3 with a 2.42 ERA in the majors this season. Yankees are also expected to sign veteran Derek Lowe who was designated for assignment about a week ago.

Yankees vs. Red Sox Post Game Recap 7/28

After a long two hour rain delay the Yankees suffered a tough 8-6 loss to the Red Sox on Saturday after a comeback in the 8th inning they lost it in the 9th inning.

C.C Sabathia had a tough time on Saturday suffering his 4th loss of the season. Sabathia allowed eight hits, two walks, six earned runs, and struck out six batters. The big blow to Sabathia’s day was a three-run homerun by Adrian Gonzalez in the 5th inning.

David Phelps was able to continue his great pitching out of the bullpen for the Yankees going another two innings only allowing one hit, and striking out three.

Rafael Soriano picked up his 1st loss of the season after Pedro Ciriaco hit a triple scoring Ellsbury that should have probably been an error on Curtis Granderson as he got all spun around and ended up falling. Ciriaco would score on a Dustin Pedroia sac-fly making it a two-run 9th for the Sox.

The biggest rivalry on the field between Mark Teixeira and Vicente Padilla added another chapter with Teixeira hitting a clutch two-run homerun off him in the 8th inning tying the game, it was Teixeira’s 20th of the season.

Sabathia’s personal catcher Chris Stewart was able to provide some offense for the Yankees hitting his 1st homerun of the season in the 3rd inning off Jon Lester.

Jayson Nix also made the most of getting a start today going 1 for 2 while hitting his 4th homerun of the season a two-run shot in the 5th inning.

Yankees will be looking to win the series at home against the Red Sox on Sunday Night Baseball, as Hiroki Kuroda (10-7, 3.34) will face Felix Doubront (10-5, 4.54).

Nix Pushes Yankees Past Mariners

The New York Yankees were able to finish a poor west coast trip on a positive note with a 5-2 win over the Seattle Mariners winning the three game series.

Yankees starter Ivan Nova was a bit wild on Wednesday afternoon walking six batters leading to a short five inning outing for Nova. Ivan despite the high number of walks only gave up two hits, and two runs in the no decision.

New York’s bullpen was great picking up Nova after a short start going a scoreless four innings. Clay Rapada was the first pitcher in a may have had the most important pitch of the game getting a double play ball after inheriting two runners with no outs. David Phelps came in and got the last out of the 6th, and picked up his second win of the season. Rafael Soriano was the only pitcher in the bullpen to allow hit, but was able to pick up his 26th save of the season.

Yankees Captain Derek Jeter was back in the number two spot where he spent a majority of his career, and had a huge game. Jeter went 3 for 4 with two runs scored, one RBI and hit his 8th homerun of the season a solo shot in the first inning.

Ichiro Suzuki was moved up in the order after batting in the eight spot got moved to leadoff, and went 1 for 5 and was caught stealing for the third time this season.

Jayson Nix had the biggest hit of the night for the Yankees pinch hitting for Raul Ibanez in the 8th inning. Nix hit a bases clearing double his 7th of the season with the bases loaded giving the Yankees a 4-2 lead.

Yankees will be off on Thursday traveling back to New York for a huge weekend series with the Red Sox starting Friday, as Phil Hughes (9-8, 4.09) will face Aaron Cook (2-3, 3.50).

Yankees Fall to Red Hot Athletics

Yankees vs Athletics Post Game Recap 7/19

Yankees fell to the red hot Oakland Athletics losing 4-3 as they weren’t able to start the trip out west the way they would have liked.

Freddy Garcia had his worst start since re-joining the rotation as Garcia allowed nine hits, two walks, and four earned runs while getting six strikeouts in his 5.2 innings of work. The big blow to Garcia’s night was a two-run homerun by Yoenis Cespedes in the first inning crushing a ball into the seats in left.

David Phelps who was called back up from the minors continued to pitch well in the majors going 2.1 innings in relief for Garcia not allowing a base runner and getting four strikeouts.

Derek Jeter did more of the same in the lead off spot with another multi-hit game going 2 for 4 with a run scored as July has been a big month for Jeter hitting .375.

Alex Rodriguez getting the start at DH where he is hitting much better than starting at third went 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Robinson Cano was able to get his hitting streak up to 22 games with a base hit in the sixth inning going 1 for 4 in the game.

Nick Swisher accounted for much of the Yankees offense going 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and hit his 14^th homerun of the season in the 9^th inning off All-Star Ryan Cook.

Yankees will look to bounce back against the Athletics with Ivan Nova (10-4, 4.18) on the hill, as he faces Oakland’s rookie Tommy Milone (9-6, 3.54).

Yankees vs Rays Post Game Recap 7/4

The Yanks were able to avoid the sweep in Tampa Bay beating the Rays 4-3 and snapping their losing streak at Tropicana Field.

The Yankees got exactly what they hoped from starter David Phelps who went 4 1/3 innings on his 75-80 pitch limit heading into the game, and only allowed one run on two hits and three walks while striking out eight batters.

Cody Eppley had a very good appearance out of the bullpen going 1 2/3 innings only allowing one hit and striking out three.

Boone Logan had a rough seventh inning after the Yankees tied it in the top half. Logan gave up a two-run home run to Carlos Pena.

David Robertson was able to pitch a scoreless eighth inning picking up two strike outs getting the hold for Rafael Soriano who was able to pick up his 19^th save of the season against his former team in the ninth.

The Yankees offense was shut down for the first four innings of the game before Robinson Cano was able to get a base hit off David Price to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, and give the Yankees their first hit. Cano would also add a huge two-run single in the eighth inning scoring Eric Chavez and Curtis Granderson to give the Yankees a late lead. Cano reached 50 RBI for the season with the two-run single

Mark Teixeira was able to get the Yankees into the scoring column with a solo shot in the seventh inning off Price for his 14^th home run of the season.

Russell Martin went 0 for 4 again on Wednesday making it 0 for his last 27 at bats, and with Stewart hitting well he has certainly earned some more at bats with Martin playing this bad.

The Yankees will be off on Thursday before starting a series with the Red Sox as Hiroki Kuroda (8-7, 3.17) will face Josh Beckett (4-7, 4.06).

Yankees vs. White Sox Post Game Recap 6/29

The Yankees got hammered in the second game of the series, as they lost to the White Sox 14-7 as today’s game showed how C.C Sabathia and Andy Pettitte will be missed.

Adam Warren’s major league debut was short lived as the 24 year old right hander was hit hard by the White Sox. In his 2.1 innings, Warren gave up eight hits, two walks and six runs, including homeruns to A.J Pierzynski and Paul Konerko.

David Phelps, in his first appearance since being called back up, was able to eat some innings going 3.1 innings. Phelps allowed four hits and two runs while striking out five; he would also suffer the loss. Phelps may be next in line to get a start after Warren's poor performance.

Cory Wade was hung out to dry Friday night as Girardi tried to get 3 innings out of him. The end result is not what he had hoped for. Wade got crushed, giving up six runs in 2.1 innings and throwing nearly 60 pitches before finally getting pulled.

Dewayne Wise came in for the Yankees to face his former team after Wade and was able to get both batters out that he faced on a fly out and ground out.

Derek Jeter was able to pass Orioles great Cal Ripken Jr. for 13th on the all-time hits list with a first inning lead off double for his 3,185th career hit.

Curtis Granderson was able to knock Jeter in right away in the first inning hitting his 22nd homerun of the season.

Andruw Jones was able to get to hit with a two out two run double off the wall scoring Alex Rodriguez and Nick Swisher. The hit gave the Yankees a four run 1st inning. Jones would add another double in the 4th inning, matching his season total coming into the game in just one night.

Jayson Nix, who got the start in left field, was able to hit his 3rd double of the season in the 4th inning scoring Swisher and Jones.

The Yankees will be playing the third game of the series against the White Sox Saturday afternoon as Hiroki Kuroda (7-7, 3.40) will be facing Jake Peavy (6-4, 2.84).

Yankees Suffer Two Big Injuries

Yankees got bad news before Wednesdays game as it was found out C.C Sabathia suffered a strained adductor muscle which is near the groin and it will force Sabathia to miss his next two starts. Sabathia was 9-3 on the season with 105 strikeouts and a 3.45 ERA. Sabathia first felt the injury against the Mets in the 4th inning. If the Yankees were in the stretch run, he would be pitching through it but they don’t want to risk a major injury. They would rather him miss two starts.

The Yankees will be bringing up Adam Warren from Triple A to take Sabathia's start on Friday against the White Sox. Adam Warren is 5-5 in the minors with a 3.86 ERA and will get a crack at the majors with at least one start.

The big injury blow for the Yankees was suffered in the 5th inning of the game against the Indians when Andy Pettitte took a line drive off the ankle, fracturing it on his left leg. Pettitte threw a couple pitches and gave it a go, throwing one game pitch but was clearly in to much pain as Girardi then pulled him. The injury put Pettitte in a walking boot but they said he wont need surgery. He is expected to miss at least six weeks as most people are figuring for a late August, early September return. Pettitte was 3-3 with a 3.22 ERA as he was pitching great in his comeback season.

Freddy Garcia, who was originally going to be taking Sabathia's start on Friday, was needed to pitch in Wednesday's game and pitched well. Garcia went 2.1 innings, not allowing a run and picked up the win in relief.  Garcia, who had an awful start to the season in the rotation, has been better in the bullpen. He is 2-2 on the season with a 6.39 ERA. Garcia was in the Yankees rotation last year and was 12-8 with a 3.62 ERA which lead to him being re-signed and Yankees will hope he can pitch like last year to fill in for Pettitte.

If Garcia and or Warren struggle, David Phelps seems like the logical choice to get the next crack at the rotation as he was sent back to the minors to stretch his arm out more. Phelps had two spot starts already for the Yankees this year and also pitched in the bullpen, giving him 33.2 innings pitched in the majors this year with a 1-2 record and 2.94 ERA.

The A.L East is one of, if not the best division in baseball with all teams over the .500 mark. The Yankees will need to get C.C back soon and have someone step in for Pettitte, who has been pitching great, or it might force Brian Cashman to make a trade before the deadline in July.
